Band history
Name-droppings: Organelles are mark bradley, paul bradley, pete judge, dan marcus. Half the band were in the legendary Anglo-Irish pop visionaries Me, and band-members have worked with the likes of Super Furry Animals, The Blue Aeroplanes, Lupine Howl, Papa Noel, Asere, The Moonflowers, Sensorium, Baraka, Morning Star, Mooz, Adrian Utley, The Startled Insects, Marc Gauvin, Big World Skunk, The Invisible Pair of Hands, The Midnight Brothers, Fritz Azay, World Government, Moonshot, The Big Fish, The Klezmernauts...
Since 1997, the gloriously uncategorisable Organelles have been steadily accruing a cult following in Japan and the southwest of England.
Three years after its release, their debut album Cellular Soul (distributed in the UK by Colours & Sounds and in Japan by Angel's Egg, and featured on BBC Radio 3's 'Late Junction') is still clogging up the CD-players of listeners loathe to leave what Venue magazine described as "musically daring, frighteningly melodic; wholesome, delicious, beguiling, heartstopping sound like none other".
Now Organelles release their long-awaited second album, Knowing You're Born, produced by Portishead's Jim Barr and again featuring the extraordinary songs of Paul Bradley.
Paul
"Belfast 1963, two months on JFK day; a little later a self-attested warchild. Left-handed, self-taught guitarist. Childhood asthmatic bedwetter. A bit contrary, bit show-offy, bit neurotic. Compelled to get a laugh and ever taking PB so seriously.
In bands with brother Mark since 1978, and still immature. Talented in inventing song and music off the cuff; in full awe of composers and writers who really craft.
I'm 39: I hope I grow more leftwing the older I am. I wish I could voice-harmonise live and naturally."
Pete
"Born Canterbury '62, but grew up, slightly, around Watford. Addicted to music. Second cornet in South West Herts Brass Band, the unacknowledged Portsmouth Sinfonia of its day.
First band = unpopular free-form-art-punk trio The Watford Co-op. Moved to Bristol in '81. Formed John's Brother ("the most original band in the Southwest") with The WC's George-Orwell lookalike singer/guitarist. Learnt skeletal jazz basics in a Cretan bathroom, and had first jazz gig with The Boys From Ipanema in Iraklion.
Thanks Jim Barr for introduction to Organelles' ("the most original band in the Southwest") Mick-McCarthy-lookalike singer/guitarist."
Mark
"Acquired first band and kit (sparkly leopardskin) at age 16 : Reflex Action - punky Belfast combo. Beard and long hair. Brother Paul played bass. Met Ronnie Pig and joined popsters Lovers of Today - which became Guilty Achievements.
Landed in England aged 20. Renewed collaborations with Ronnie Pig Esq in Reluctors : again, stylish pop. Was sole male in R+B outfit, Gorilla My Dreams before joining psychedelic politicos - Thermometers. Reunited with Paul, at last, in Me, and simultaneously in flamenco-flavoured Midnight Brothers. During 1990s fell in with Rita Lynch Band, Big Fish, Moonflowers and Baraka amongst others.
Dan
Born London 1971. Then puberty and wanted to be in a band; had the deepest voice so naturally played bass. Lots of hours trying to work out James Brown and Hendrix bass lines.
Then to Plymouth and proper band-in-the-back-of-van-round-Britain experience. Saw too many desolate service stations. All the time absorbing, listening to the bottom line.
Moved to Bristol, saw Organelles - blown away. One year later asked to be in the band, refused. Then saw the light, saw the music and blown away again.
5 years and 2 children later just beginning to understand...
